Part of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s mission to improve the health and health care of the residents of the communities it serves, the company makes Community Health Awards adding up to a total of $25,000 available to help fund health and wellness programs in Central New York.
Nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organizations in Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s eight-county CNY region are invited to apply for an award of up to $4,000 each, which can be used for a program that has clear goals to improve the health or health care of a specific population in the community.
“The company’s Community Health Awards demonstrate a corporate commitment to support local organizations that share our mission as a nonprofit health plan,” said Arthur Vercillo, M.D., regional president, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “These awards complement our existing grants and sponsorships with agencies that work to enhance quality of life, including health status, in Central New York.”
In granting the awards, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield considers organizations which offer programs that focus on:
Activities that improve the health status of the community or that reduce the incidence of specific diseases.
Communitywide health education.
Group-specific health education.
Wellness.
To be eligible, the organization must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and located in Cayuga, Cortland, Jefferson, Lewis, Onondaga, Oswego, St. Lawrence or Tompkins County.
Awards will be made based on:
Scope of need.
Goals of program.
Overall number of persons to benefit from the program.
Positive impact on the community’s health status.
“In the 75 years that Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has been serving residents of upstate New York, the company has supported hundreds of programs that are aimed at improving the health status of area residents,” said Vercillo. “We’re pleased to continue that effort by offering Community Health Awards to nonprofits in Central New York.”
The deadline for organizations to submit an application to be considered for an Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Community Health Award is August 9, 2013. Applications and additional information are available online at Community Health Awards or by emailing Community.Health.Awards.CNY@excellus.com. Applications received after the August 9 deadline will not be considered. Awards will distributed in October.

ARTS Council awards $65,876 in grants

The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts recently announced recipients of the 2013 Decentralization grant programs.
More than 30 area organizations and artists will receive a total of $65,876 for community and school-based based arts and cultural programs taking place in 2013.
The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes serves artists of all disciplines, arts and cultural organizations and the public in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Tioga counties of New York State, and beyond.
An award ceremony to honor the award winners and distribute the grants will be held Thursday evening, at the Clemens Center in Elmira.

Area organizations receive funding for National Volunteer Week projects
Bath, NY —
As a part of New York State’s Volunteer Generation initiative, the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier has made available over $3,800 in grants to local organizations participating in the National Volunteer Week, a portion of which will be distributed in the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben region. This diverse group of projects will allow organizations throughout the region to celebrate National Volunteer Week through community service, volunteer recognition, and education.
“Volunteers are one of the most valuable resources that nonprofits have. They serve on boards, provide direct services, raise money, and educate the community on the needs in the region,” explains Patrick Rogers, Executive Director of the Institute for Human Services. “We are so happy to provide this funding to allow our local nonprofits to recognize and better utilize volunteers during National Volunteer Week.”
After reviewing all of the proposals, the Steering Committee of the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier chose to fund the following programs in the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Region.

· Chemung ARC: To have a community cookout to draw people to adopt garden beds and to become more engaged with Quatrano Park.
· Friends of Chemung River Watershed: Will lead a trash cleanup on the Lackawanna Rail Trail in Elmira.

· Hornell Area Concern for Youth: To provide t-shirts to mentors for their Caring Attitudes Mentoring Program.
· Steuben Coordinated Transportation: To purchase oil changes for volunteer drivers that take clients all over the region for non-emergency medical appointments in their own vehicles.
The Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier is a collaboration which promotes and enhances local volunteer efforts. Working with local nonprofits, the Center’s goal is to build the volunteer infrastructure in the region so that more people are able to make a difference. It is led by the Institute for Human Services, the United Way of Broome County, and United Way of Tompkins County. National Volunteer Week Funds Available

National Volunteer Week: April 21-27, 2013
Are you planning a volunteer event as part of National Volunteer Week during April 21-27th? Could you use some additional funds to enhance your project's impact?
If you have answered "YES" to either of these questions then consider applying for a mini-grant from 2-1-1 HELPLINE Give Help and the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier!
Because of this partnership, we are to be able to offer mini-grants to support local volunteer efforts in Chemung, Steuben and Schuyler Counties during National Volunteer Week. If your organization is currently planning an event for that week and could use some additional funding to enhance your efforts we encourage you to request a mini-grant of up to $350. If you are interested in applying for a mini-grant, simply fill out our online application by going to the link below. Please complete the survey by Friday March 29th. Decisions regarding project funding will be made by Friday April 5th, 2013.

| Tammy VanVleck is currently serving at Catholic Charities in Bath, where she assists in providing those in poverty with various programs and initiatives. Tammy decided to join AmeriCorps because it offered her the opportunity to gain experience in the Human Services field while simultaneously completing her practicum toward her Associate's Degree. Although balancing school and learning her duties as an AmeriCorps member have been challenging, Tammy finds it very rewarding to be able to give back to those in need. Read More About Tammy > |

For the sixth year, Catholic Charities' Emergency Services Programs will participate in The Feinstein Foundation's Million Dollar Challenge to fight hunger. During the months of March and April, all donations to Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry in Watkins Glen or the Samaritan Center in Elmira will increase the Programs' share of a million dollar fund - donations can include cash, checks, and food items valued at $1 per item or pound. Every donation and gift will stay in the county in which the Emergency Services Programs are located, ensuring that every dollar given back remains in the local community. Learn More >
