ACTION ALERT on Charitable Tax Extenders

Urge Congress to Permanently Extend Key Charitable Giving Incentives
Congress needs to hear from you today!
Leaders in the House and Senate are now considering passing a separate bill to make the charitable provisions permanent. But they need to hear from you today to understand that passing permanent extensions of these tax incentives is very important to nonprofits and the people you serve. Congress shouldn't quit for the year before getting this done.

TAKE ACTION
Time is truly of the essence, so contact your Representative and Senators today by phone, email, or social media.

By Phone:
Call the Capitol switchboard (202-224-3121), ask to be connected to your Senators' and Representative's offices.

By Email:
Find your Senators' email addresses and your Representatives email address and send them this message, along with any other information about how the expired giving incentives have helped your nonprofit perform work in their communities:

Tell your representatives to:
"Make the three charitable tax incentives (extenders) permanent before adjourning; our communities rely on work funded by these incentives and we are counting on your help.

Congress needs to make permanent the three charitable tax incentives - the IRA Rollover, the enhanced deduction for donations of food inventories and donations of conservation easements - so that all nonprofits can plan for the future and secure support for their work. Read more here about why we need these incentives for giving extended.

Tweet to your Representatives Today!

@_____ Our communities deserve better than a 3-week tax extension; make charitable giving incentives permanent #protectgiving

@_____ 3-week tax extension doesn't help the communities #nonprofits serve; make charitable giving incentives permanent #protectgiving

@_____ HR5771 = a 3-week extension; communities served by #nonprofits deserve better. Make charitable giving incentives permanent

News from the Institute for Human Services

AmeriCorps Kids First Initiative Member in the Spotlight: Tammy VanVleck
Tammy VanVleck is currently serving at Catholic Charities in Bath, where she assists in providing those in poverty with various programs and initiatives. Tammy decided to join AmeriCorps because it offered her the opportunity to gain experience in the Human Services field while simultaneously completing her practicum toward her Associate's Degree. Although balancing school and learning her duties as an AmeriCorps member have been challenging, Tammy finds it very rewarding to be able to give back to those in need.  Read More About Tammy >

During the months of March and April, all donations to Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry in Watkins Glen or the Samaritan Center in Elmira will increase the Programs' share of a million dollar fund - donations can include cash, checks, and food items valued at $1 per item or pound. Every donation and gift will stay in the county in which the Emergency Services Programs are located, ensuring that every dollar given back remains in the local community. Learn More >
Brain Injury Awareness Night Hosted by AIM Independent Living Center
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, however, with recent media stories, it can be unclear who can have or receive a brain injury, how brain injuries can occur, or what constitutes a brain injury. Brain injuries do not discriminate - an estimated 3.1 million Americans live with a brain injury, and many more are undiagnosed or aren't acknowledged as an injury. Join AIM Independent Living Center tonight (Wednesday, March 20th) from 5 pm - 6:15 pm for an informational session at the Corning office, located at 271 East First Street. Learn More >

NYSACRA Action Alert

NYSACRA Action Alert

PLEASE consider reaching out to your assemblyman and senator to express your concern over the cuts proposed below. Springbrook provides invaluable support to people with developmental disabilities. The proposed 6% cut equates to $1.2 million for this organization. The proposed 6% cut equates to $1.2 million for this organization. The phone calls take less than a minute each. PLEASE PLEASE call.

As you are well aware, the proposed 2013-14 Executive Budget proposes a 6% across the board cut to all voluntary not-for-profit providers throughout the State of New York, effective April 1, 2013.  If this cut is enacted, the developmental disabilities system of supports and services will be negatively impacted, dramatically.  NYSACRA has received information from members as to how the reductions will be absorbed if a restoration is not successful.  Agencies will be forced to: reduce services and supports, eliminate entire programs, layoff all levels of staff including direct support professionals.  We all know how this will translate if the cuts are to be taken: the great strides we've made as a sector will quickly erode and the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) will be negatively impacted.

Both houses of the State Legislature are in the process of negotiating and getting ready to release the respective one-house budget measures.  While we understand the 6% across the board cut to the not-for-profit developmental disabilities sector is gaining great attention in the State Legislature, we need to continue advocacy efforts and therefore we are asking agencies, parents and family members, agency staff and direct support professionals, self advocates to make two telephone calls this week.

WHO TO CALL:
Please make two telephone calls, one to your State Assemblymember and the other to your State Senator in their Albany Offices

WHEN:
This week (the week of March 4th)

WHAT'S MY MESSAGE:
"I'm a constituent and I am concerned the proposed 6% across the board cut to the not-for-profit developmental disabilities providers will negatively impact supports, services and programs.  I wish to thank my Assemblymember/Senator for his/her support of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and ask him/her to support restoration of the 6% proposed cut in the one-house budget bill."

HOW:
Contact the Assembly Operator at 518-455-4100 and ask to be transferred to your Assemblymember's Office. (if you do not know who your Member of the Assembly is, go towww.assembly.state.ny.us to identify your Member.  You may also obtain his/her direct Albany Office telephone number, rather than going through the Assembly Operator).

Contact the Senate Operator at 518-455-2800 and ask to be transferred to your Senator's Office (if you do not know who your Member of the Senate is, go to www.nysenate.gov to identify your Senator. You may also obtain his/her Albany Office telephone number on the website, rather than going through the Senate Operator).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ONGOING ADVOCACY AND EFFORTS!
