News From the Institute for Human Services AmeriCorps Kids First Initiative Member in the Spotlight: Tamar Samuel-Siegel

Tamar Samuel-Siegel is currently serving in her second term at the Southeast Steuben County Library, where she has learned storytelling skills, program development, and a variety of childhood education and human services strategies. Tamar decided to become an AmeriCorps Member due to the opportunity to learn, work, and serve, three activities that she not only values, but also believes to be inherently valuable to local and national community. Although she is currently being challenged with the question of what she will do when her service is complete, Tamar has enjoyed the structure of a public service position and the freedom to explore her own interests while pursuing challenges she may not have encountered had she not served as an AmeriCorps Member. National Volunteer Week - Celebrate Service

The Institute for Human Services is working to celebrate service this week by raising awareness for the many volunteer efforts around the area.  IHS is collaborating with multiple organizations and entities to make National Volunteer Week a success.  Three mayors have proclaimed it National Volunteer Week, IHS is recognizing two organizations as IHS Volunteer Partners of the Year, and our Steuben Coordinated Transportation program will be having a volunteer recognition luncheon.  Thousands of people just in the Southern Tier give of themselves and work to improve the region by taking action and volunteering.  A big thank you goes out to all of those who give of themselves and make a difference! Last year, the IHS Volunteer Conference attracted over 90 nonprofit professionals throughout the region and New York State, from a variety of nonprofit sectors such as human services, health care, environmental, children & families, youth, etc. Participants typically represented people who work with, administer, coordinate or manage volunteers. Currently, the Institute for Human Services, Inc., is seeking presenters on a broad range of topics related to nonprofit issues and trends that will benefit all levels of professionals in the nonprofit work place. Participants will be interested in workshops that offer concrete ideas, methods, and resources that they can incorporate into their own programs and services. This year, the conference will be held on November 13, 2013, at the Radisson in Corning. Girls on the Run 5K Celebration!

Run - Walk - Hop - Skip - Jump - Celebrate! The Girls on the Run of the Southern Tier 5k presented by the Steuben Rural Health Network will take place on Saturday, June 8th at 9:30 a.m. at the Mark Twain Riverfront Park, Downtown Elmira. More than 160 of the runners will be girls from all over the Southern Tier who have trained with volunteer coaches for 10 weeks as part of the Girls on the Run program.  The 5k is a family-friendly, non-competitive, and open to the public. Workshop - "Adding Silver to the Rainbow: Providing Culturally Competent Care to the LGBT Older Adult"

This is a free educational opportunity for professional nursing staff and the healthcare workforce. Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago, IL received a federal (HRSA) grant to develop a comprehensive curriculum for nurses and healthcare staff focused on caring for the older LGBT adult. This cultural competency curriculum, named Nurses' HEALE (Healthcare Education About LGBT Elders), is being coordinated by Chemung Valley and Steuben Rural Health Networks and will be presented by staff from Howard Brown Medical Center on Wednesday, May 15th, from 9 am to 4:30 pm, at the Chemung County Health Complex. Area organizations receive funding for National Volunteer Week projects

As a part of New York State’s Volunteer Generation initiative, the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier has made available over $3,800 in grants to local organizations participating in the National Volunteer Week, a portion of which will be distributed in the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben region. This diverse group of projects will allow organizations throughout the region to celebrate National Volunteer Week through community service, volunteer recognition, and education.
“Volunteers are one of the most valuable resources that nonprofits have. They serve on boards, provide direct services, raise money, and educate the community on the needs in the region,” explains Patrick Rogers, Executive Director of the Institute for Human Services. “We are so happy to provide this funding to allow our local nonprofits to recognize and better utilize volunteers during National Volunteer Week.”
After reviewing all of the proposals, the Steering Committee of the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier chose to fund the following programs in the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Region.

Chemung County:
· Chemung ARC: To have a community cookout to draw people to adopt garden beds and to become more engaged with Quatrano Park.
· Friends of Chemung River Watershed: Will lead a trash cleanup on the Lackawanna Rail Trail in Elmira.

Schuyler County:
· Catholic Charities Schuyler (Schuyler Outreach): Will have a volunteer recognition and appreciation lunch for their volunteers.
· Schuyler County Office for the Aging:  To conduct outreach events to recruit volunteers to assist in highly needed service areas.

Steuben County:
· American Red Cross – Hornell: Will have a banquet with a speaker to recognize volunteers.
· Avoca Hose Company #1: To have a volunteer recognition reception with gifts for the volunteers.
· Catholic Charities Steuben, Corning Turning Point: Will provide volunteers with lunch and a gift.
· Hornell Area Concern for Youth: To provide t-shirts to mentors for their Caring Attitudes Mentoring Program.
· Steuben Coordinated Transportation: To purchase oil changes for volunteer drivers that take clients all over the region for non-emergency medical appointments in their own vehicles.
The Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier is a collaboration which promotes and enhances local volunteer efforts. Working with local nonprofits, the Center’s goal is to build the volunteer infrastructure in the region so that more people are able to make a difference. It is led by the Institute for Human Services, the United Way of Broome County, and United Way of Tompkins County. It's National Volunteer Week!  "Celebrate Service" from April 21-27.  This is a perfect opportunity to recognize volunteers at various organizations, whether with a simple thank you, note, gift or even a celebratory event.     Volunteers truly help us to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals.

The Institute for Human Services is recognizing two organizations for the first annual IHS Volunteer Partner of the Year Award to commemorate National Volunteer Week 2013.  We are "celebrating the service" of these two organizations as they support hundreds of volunteers through their programs in Chemung and Steuben Counties.  A big thank you goes out to the Chemung Volunteer Action Corps and the Steuben Office for the Aging!  These organizations will be recognized at the United Way on Friday April 26 at a press conference at 9 a.m.

April Volunteer in the Spotlight: Karen Charnetski

This month's Volunteer in the Spotlight, Karen Charnetski, dedicates her time as a volunteer to Girls on the Run of the Southern Tier. Upon learning about the program in July 2012, Karen become involved with GOTRST through recruiting additional volunteers, as well as serving as a course monitor for the inaugural 5k Celebration. Currently, Karen is volunteering as a GOTRST Coach at Hendy Elementary. Initially, Karen became interested in the program through her love of running and spending time with kids, however, after learning more about GOTRST, she was in awe at how wonderful and empowering the program truly is. As a mother of three boys, Karen finds dedicating her time to GOTRST and being with the girls to be a guilty pleasure, rather than a challenge. Organizations Receive Funding for National Volunteer Week Projects

The Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier (RVCST) distributed minigrants to five counties in the area to help organizations celebrate volunteers for National Volunteer Week. The RVCST is a collaboration of the Institute for Human Services, United Way of Broome County and United Way of Tompkins County. Pinwheels for Prevention in Steuben County

There are pinwheels being placed all over Steuben County for Child Abuse Prevention Month.  These pinwheels are in front of the Addison Youth Center.  The Child Abuse Prevention Task Force is promoting the message "I promise...", where each member of their community promises to help a neighbor or parent.  This could be offering to babysit for an hour or bringing over dinner.  Remembering each play a part in raising future generations.   To see more on the IHS click here.

IRS Reports 10,000 Fewer Nonprofits In 2012

There were 10,000 fewer registered tax-exempt organizations in 2012 than in 2011. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Data Book for 2012, which was released Monday, there were 1,484,818 501(c) organizations for the fiscal year ending in September, compared with 1,494,882 in 2011 – a decrease of 10,064, or about 0.68 percent.Read more... We are seeking presenters on a broad range of topics related to nonprofit issues and trends that will benefit all levels of professionals in the nonprofit work place. Participants will be interested in workshops that offer concrete ideas, methods, and resources that they can incorporate into their own programs and services.

Review Process:  

Upon receipt of an application package, the conference planning committee will review it for completeness and topic relevance. Acceptance notices will be e-mailed in June.

Workshop Format:  

Each workshop session is 90 minutes long, including time for questions. You may present your session in lecture, discussion, or panel format. Interactive sessions are encouraged.

Workshop Categories: 

Below is a list of topic areas that we would like to cover. The list is not all-inclusive; if you have a presentation that does not address one of these topics but that is generally relevant to the nonprofit sector, it will be considered by the planning committee.  These topics are suggestions from past educational opportunities relating to volunteerism.
